General Information

Daniel Chao, MD, PhD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist and a vitreoretinal surgeon. He specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of retinal diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, epiretinal membrane, macular hole, and retinal vein occlusion.As an assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology, he has a special interest in macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy and leads a research program that uses zebrafish to study retinal vascular diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. His long-term goal is to identify treatments that can help save the vision of people with blinding retinal diseases. As an investigator, he is involved with clinical trials for new treatments for retinal disease. His work has been published in journals such as Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology, and JAMA Ophthalmology. Dr. Chao completed a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at UC San Francisco School of Medicine. He completed a residency in ophthalmology at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami. He earned his medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine and a doctorate in neurosciences from Stanford University School of Medicine. He is board-certified in ophthalmology. Dr. Chao is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. He is the recipient of many awards, including the National Alliance for Eye and Vision Emerging Vision Scientist award and the William F. Hoyt Teaching award.
