General Information

Roderick "Rick" Lopez was born in Corpus Christi and raised in Starr County, Texas. He attended Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Economics in 1995. Upon graduation, he went to work for Farmers Insurance in Laredo, Texas as claims adjuster. He primarily handled auto, homeowner and commercial insurance claims in the Webb County area. Mr. Lopez then attended Thurgood Marshall School of Law where he earned the distinction of being named on the Dean's List every semester. During law school, Mr. Lopez served as a judicial intern for the Honorable Justice Tim Taft with the First Court of Appeals. In 2000, he was recognized by the Houston Hispanic Bar Association for his outstanding scholastic achievement receiving the James DeAnda scholarship. Mr. Lopez obtained his Doctorate of Jurisprudence in 2001 graduating magna cum laude. Mr. Lopez began his legal career at a large Plaintiff's personal injury firm in Houston, Texas. During this time, he handled hundreds of personal injury cases where individuals suffered as a result of another person's negligence. After gaining substantial experience, Mr. Lopez joined another large Plaintiff's firm where he focused his time and attention on litigating cases in Galveston and Harris counties. Mr. Lopez joined the Webb County District Attorney's office in Laredo, Webb County, Texas in 2006. Mr. Lopez handled felony cases involving child sexual abuse. As a father of three, he fervently advocated on behalf of victims of child abuse and became an integral part of the special victims unit. Mr. Lopez was then selected to be the chief felony prosecutor for the 341st District Court. As chief felony prosecutor, Mr. Lopez prosecuted violent crimes such as murder, aggravated assault, kidnapping as well as other felony offenses. Mr. Lopez also prosecuted white collar crimes that involved the embezzlement and theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars. During his tenure at the Webb County District Attorney's office, Mr. Lopez presented numerous cases to juries and handled several appeals which ultimately enhanced his experience in criminal law. In January of 2010, Mr. Lopez decided to focus his time and attention toward representing individuals, families and businesses which faced serious legal disputes. While he does not limit his practice to any specific area, Mr. Lopez has significant experience in the areas of personal injury and criminal defense. Mr. Lopez is admitted to practice in Texas state courts as well as the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of Texas. He is a member of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association, Association of Trial Lawyers of America, State Bar College of Texas and current president of the Laredo Young Lawyers Association.
